Tethering and Reverse tethering

In the modern day life, mobile phone and internet connection are two essential things you can never divide. Gone are the days where you should use two separate internet connections for the both. A concept called tethering allowed the mobile phones to share their internet connection with a PC or a laptop. Tethering is mainly done in three ways. 1. USB Tethering 2. Bluetooth tethering 3. WiFi tethering

As the name suggest, USB tethering is about sharing the internet via a USB cable. This is the most simplest and straight forward type. As an added advantage, the mobile phone battery do not drain out fast (both Bluetooth and WIFI are power hungry), because most of the mobiles charge through USB. When wired, the internet connection is fast and secure, just to mention the other two advantages. Most desktop PCs do not come ready with Bluetooth and WiFi support, so USB tethering is the savior here.

Bluetooth tethering is somewhere in between USB and WiFi tethering. It is not as power hungry, not costly, not complicated, not fast, not high ranged, not secure, available as WiFi. Due to this combi nature I personally don't prefer Bluetooth as my option for tethering.

Coming to the WIFI type, it is by far the best option for tethering. The reason being, no wired connectivity-no hassles, most secure (with WPA2 the current available, you can provide 256 bit keys. Remember some of the devices may not support WPA2 but most of them can), very fast (54 Mbps). There are downsides though: It is highly power consuming, connectivity range is limited by distance and obstructions, cost of access points.

Any of the above tethering methods is easy to accomplish. You can do it straight away with your phone-because it will by default have the tethering options. When connected your data cable, phone prompts to chose USB tethering or file sharing. Select USB tethering and then set the browser on your PC side. Go to the browser settings and click "Automatically Detect settings" just shown in the following pictures for Firefox and IE consecutively.

Then what is the very purpose of writing this article for a matter as smooth as a hot knife through butter? It gets complicated at this question: How about the reverse mechanism?

That is, I have to share the internet connection available on my Desktop PC or Laptop with a mobile phone. Now it gets tricky, because our Laptops or Desktop PCs doesn't support this feature by default, or it is not simple either.

The process is named as "Reverse Tethering" as you would expect. Reverse tethering too is possible with both USB and WIFI, I skipped the Bluetooth part as it is no longer fresh and feasible.

1. Reverse Tethering via USB for a Rooted Android device from Windows 7

First and foremost accept the fact that it can't be done to a non rooted android. Don't ask me what is Rooting and how it can be done, I will make a separate post on that topic.

1. Install Terminal Emulator app. By default your rooted phone will be equipped with one. If not get an apk file. Connect your android phone via USB cable.
2. Open "Network Connections" in your PCs Control Panel. Right click on an Internet connection that you want to share. Right click on LAN Ethernet connection with Internet, and select "Properties". In tab "Sharing", click "Allow other network users to connect through...", then select the USB connection in drop down list below. Click OK. Windows will automatically setup your USB network connection and assign to it an IP address, default for Windows 7: 192.168.137.1. You can see your Internet connection is now "Shared" and your USB connection is now "Unidentified network".
3. Now open the Terminal on your rooted Android device and type

su

The $ must now be changed to # on the terminal.

4. Type

netcfg rndis0 dhcp

5. The name for usb interface inside Android may vary. It is usually rndis0 or usb0. Type
Code:
busybox ifconfig
to identify the name.

6. Now you can close Terminal Emulator and start the browser for Internet.

Some applications (download in Google Play, GMail, Facebook...) don't recognize Internet connection. However, you can seamlessly enjoy internet on a browser.

7. To counter the above problem, type the following in the terminal emulator on Android

busybox ifconfig

Try to figure out the 3G connection name from the output of the above command. Generally it will be either rmnet0 or ppp0

8. Then enter the following command

ifconfig rmnet0 0.0.0.0

9. This command makes the Android think that internet is available via 3G but not with USB cable. We cheated it, but we did it :)

2. Reverse tethering via WIFI

This method is somewhat simpler as many free third party tools are available for doing it on our behalf. What we really do here is we create a fake WIFI access point. The WIFI network card installed on your PC must support virtualization for doing this. So check out the name and model of your network card first. Type ipconfig /all in the command prompt. From the output check out the model number. Find it on the internet whether it supports virtualization or not. You can skip this step if your PC is latest.

Go to the networks and sharing center and click on the name of your adapter to which you are connected to.
In my case I am browsing through Local Area Connection.

Click on local area connection, go to properties switch to the sharing tab, check "Allow other network users  to share this network". Then choose wireless connection 2 from the drop down menu. Click OK.
So your present Internet connection is all set to share the internet with some other PC or Android mobile. Now we have to create a virtual (fake) WIFI access point on our PC.

1. Download either of these WIFI access point creating tools. i. Connectify ii. mHotspot

you can follow the instructions from the tools' support and setting up an access point is pretty straight forward.
Give your connection a name and password security as shown in the green and yellow marks. Then click Start Hotspot. Your virtual hotspot will be created and can be seen the list of networks on your android devices.
Just tap the name of your Hotspot and you will be connected to it right away.

Found it easy? Here comes the twist. Most of us use Broadband modems, USB Modems (Like Idea, MTS, TATA Photon Plus) which use dymanic IP. It is no problem for the Hotspot creating tools. But when we use static IP with a proxy server, the situation gets worse. The Android  do not know the proxy server address and port number. So apparently there is nothing we can do about Android. But Windows phone 8 (Nokia Lumia 520) has an option to enter the proxy server and port details manually.

ou can get the proxy server details as shown in the above pic. Now enter then i the Windows Phone. Open the menu on your WP 8, Go to WIFI, click on the hotspot name, enter the proxy and port number. Voila, you can enjoy internet without paying a dime!

As you can see the proxy and port from my browser and Phone do match. In my case they are 192.168.10.1 and 808.

Hope this article helped you. Happy "Free" Browsing on your phone!!!

(Globalization: Selling Branded Items at a high cost)
